Another flat stage at the 4 Jours de Dunkerque had some addition obstacles to overcome with several short cobbled sectors on the local laps around Pont-à-Marcq. Unfortunately, the stage got off to an unlucky start for the team as Sean Flynn and Nils Eekhoff were involved in a crash, with the latter having to abandon the race with a dislocated shoulder. The team regrouped with Tim Naberman, Pat Eddy and Enzo Leijnse positioning Flynn, John Degenkolb and Casper van Uden going into the laps. There were multiple attacks but the team was always represented to cover things, and the stage looked like it was coming down to a reduced sprint finale. However, one rider from the breakaway just held on for the stage win while Van Uden led the team across the line in the sprint.
Van Uden expressed: “It was an unfortunate start to the race for us because we lost Nils in a crash, who was one of our cards we wanted to play today. The race was pretty full on but the guys always covered the attacks well. In the finale we tried to drop me off in a good position, but I just did not make it in the high places anymore in the sprint to the line. Tomorrow is the day in the hills before we have another sprint opportunity on Sunday.”
