After being involved in the crash yesterday, further checks revealed no fractures for anyone, but unfortunately Eglantine Rayer, Josie Nelson and Esmée Peperkamp did not start the final day of racing in Burgos. The remaining Team dsm-firmenich PostNL duo of Megan Jastrab and Maeve Plouffe then set out with the plan to try and animate the race, looking to make the break and fight for it to make it to the line or as far as possible before the tough finale. Despite multiple attempts from both, neither was able to form a group that would go clear as the peloton always reeled them back in. Ultimately, it meant no result on the stage for the team but there was definitely a lot of fighting spirit on display.
Speaking after the stage Jastrab explained: “We started the final stage with only Maeve and myself due to everyone else having injuries from the crashes yesterday. Our goal was to be in the breakaway and try to get a head start going into the final climb. I can confidently say we tried and tried again, but the peloton was keen on keeping it together. Even though we didn’t achieve a nice result, I am proud of how we rode today. I’m also happy with how my form was on the last day of the stage race during the harder moments and on a course that is normally out of my comfort zone. Looking forward to building on this for the rest of the season.”
