A route that could be split into two distinct parts, the opening part of the race took on flatter roads before a hillier final third which included three passes of the Waseberg climb. Riding well as a unit throughout the day Team dsm-firmenich PostNL took up position in the peloton behind the breakaway, with those out front slowly reeled in as the kilometres ticked by. Coming into the decisive hilly finale, the team bubbled up and managed to avoid any crashes, cresting the final ascent of the Waseberg with Niklas Märkl, Bram Welten and Tobias Lund Andresen in the reduced peloton.
Heading into the sprint finish, Märkl and Welten brought Lund Andresen well towards the fore in the final three kilometres but on the twisting streets of Hamburg things became hectic as the multiple sprint teams battled for position. Lund Andresen got squeezed at one moment after one of the tight corners and as a result several riders came past him at pace. Digging deep to get back onto the coattails of those ahead of him, he pushed all-in to the line to finish just outside the top ten in 11th place on the day.
Lund Andresen expressed: “We really did a good job being together all day and getting into the Waseberg at the front every time. I felt really good in the final but I messed up a corner with around two kilometres to go. From there it was impossible to do a proper sprint but I’m happy with how we rode as a group and hopefully I can do my full sprint next time.”
