Despite an almost pancake flat parcours three riders tried their luck in the day’s breakaway, which was kept on a tight leash by the peloton, with Team dsm-firmenich PostNL contributing with Julius van den Berg and Enzo Leijnse in the chase to bring things down to a sprint. Being caught with forty kilometres to go, the peloton prepared for the third bunch sprint of the race. In the last five kilometres, the team came to the front of the peloton to position Jakobsen well for the final push. The peloton were nervous on the windy roads, and the team unfortunately couldn’t hold position, losing sight of the front of the race. Eventually, Jakobsen was too far behind to compete for the win but gave it his all and in all the hustle and bustle, led the team home in 10th position.
After the 5th stage, Jakobsen commented: “Today was another fast one and the guys did a really good job for me, keeping me out of the wind and trouble. In the last kilometres, Tobias gave it one final push to bring me near the front of the race after the last roundabout, but unfortunately, I didn’t have anything left to launch my sprint. This was all I had for today, but tomorrow there is one final chance for a nice sprint result in the UAE Tour”.
