Coming into the Giro d’Italia as part of the successful sprint group at the Tour of Türkiye, Bram Welten was looking forward to being part of more successes with the team at his first ever Grand Tour. Unfortunately, that goal has been cut short and he has had to abandon the race after coming down with an elevated temperature and a cough and is therefore not medically fit to start stage four.
Team dsm-firmenich PostNL physician Camiel Aldershof expressed: “Bram initially started to struggle on Monday’s stage with a cough and bad chest. Medical checks this morning revealed an elevated temperature next to a worsening cough. We decided in the best interest of his health and those around him, that he should take no further part in the race. Bram will now take the needed time to rest and recover at home.”
Team dsm-firmenich PostNL coach Matt Winston added: “Bram is super disappointed to leave the race this morning. He had some good shape coming here but it is not only his ability on the bike that we will be without, it’s also the good atmosphere he brings to the group off the bike as well. We will miss his teamwork in the race and of course his role in the lead-out for our sprint group. We all wish him a good recovery and the rest of the guys here are motivated to continue in a good way.”
