The opening stage at the Tour de Hongrie saw a calm affair in the opening part of the day with the early crosswind threats abating. All of the Team dsm-firmenich PostNL riders remained in the bunch, looking to protect sprint finisher Emils Liepins, while a breakaway formed out front. The sprint teams were always in control though and reeled in those out front coming into the finale. It was a hectic and chaotic closing five kilometres, with the team moving up well to bring Liepins into position. However, launching his sprint and jumping across to follow the wheels Liepins unfortunately clipped another rider’s front wheel, with a crash ensuing in the bunch. After a review post-stage, the jury ultimately decided to relegate Liepins’ sprint result to the end of the results sheet.
Team dsm-firmenich PostNL hope those involved in the crash are okay.
