The final day of racing at the Tour de Hongrie saw arguably the hardest stage of the race, with three passages of the steep final climb coming in the closing 50 kilometres of the day. It was a fast start with lots of attacks and Team dsm-firmenich PostNL were once again present at the front, represented in an 11-rider move with Pavel Bittner. Back in the peloton, the rest of the squad looked after and positioned Van den Broek as the climbs in the finale approached. With the break splitting up, Bittner held on over the penultimate ascent of the climb and could then help Van den Broek, who himself had followed a few probing attacks on that time up. Bittner then did brilliantly to position Van den Broek for the last ascent, where it was then all about the legs, as Van den Broek fought to the line to take fifth place on the stage.
Van den Broek said: “We were motivated to race again today. Emils and Niklas positioned me very well in the run in to the local lap and the first time up the climb. I was feeling a bit sore from the crash two days ago but when the racing started I felt very good. Pavel was very strong in the early breakaway and was able to come over the last climb in the main group with me. He then did great work getting me into the bottom of the last climb. I just did not have the power to follow the first four guys but I’m very happy to come fifth today.”
