The final day of action at Tour de Romandie Féminin took on a hilly parcours with very little flat roads throughout the race. From the beginning the team looked to infiltrate the move with an aim of fighting for the stage win, however, despite their best early attempts no move would stick. Over one of hte many climbs, a few attacks were made by the race favourites which Juliette Labous followed ably, before a strong counter-attacking duo would go on to make the race winning move. Behind things stalled and their gap grew out to over four minutes, so the team helped in the chase, including a strong Nienke Vinke who really upped the pace on the final ascent. However, it would ultimately be in vain as the duo ahead fought it out for the stage win while Labous led the team home in the peloton for tenth place; dropping down one spot overall to end the race in sixth.
Labous said: “Today was quite a hard day. We followed the attacks well in the first lap all together, but on the second lap I followed the favourites on the climb and Fisher-Black and Markus countered from the back and unfortunately none of us could get in that breakaway. From that moment it was not directly up to us to ride as I was fifth in GC but the organisation wasn’t good between teams. Nienke upped the pace during the last climb to reduce the gap and we attacked from the top. In the last ten kilometres we saw the gap was still big so Nienke chased with Movistar and Liv Jayco but unfortunately we didn’t catch the break. There was a small crash in the final roundabout which Nienke got caught up in, but luckily I could avoid it and she seems okay. We all did what we could today but overall it’s a bit of a frustrating day as we had good feelings but didn’t play for the win in the end and we also lost one spot in GC. Personally, I’m happy with my shape after a break due to illness, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the final part of the season.”
