Day two at Tirreno-Adriatico always looked like it would be one for the sprinters with a predominantly flat run-in for the final 50 kilometres and just a few short hills to navigate, but with everyone still fresh early in the race even this type of finish was going to be hotly contested. The day’s early break consisted of just four riders, a move that was kept under close control by the peloton with eventually just one rider left out front with 40 kilometres to go. All was back together heading into the final 30 kilometres and from here it was about navigating the finale safely and positioning heading into the technical finish in Follonica. After a hard-fought sprint to the line, Casper van Uden crossed in sixth, moving up to fifth following the relegation of Biniam Girmay ahead of him.
After the stage, Van Uden commented: “The boys worked very hard out there today and did a really good job during the stage. We tried to take it on and it was going well but then in the last four kilometres we got swamped a bit, but we managed to stay quite calm and still deliver a decent result.”
